Comparing the 1st two months

The Jack Street Hustlers were the fastest team out of the gate in the first year of LEG. The Hustlers walked through the first month crushing their AL opponents to the tune of a 23-6 record for April.

The Clockwork Heros and Coastline Bobcats paced the NL West and East respectively with impressive records of 20-9 while top honors in the AL West went to the Menomonee Minutemen with a cool 19-11 record.

Rounding out the top 10 teams by record for the first month were:
Lewisberry 18-11
Cincinnati 18-11
Purry 18-11
Climax 17-12
Detroit 17-12
Hoboken 17-12

There were a few teams that spent a little too much time celebrating the end of the draft and that had them dragging their heels in the early going of the 2020 season:
Pigtown 6-23
Indiana 9-20
KC Blues 9-20

Whether Steve Cutler deserves the credit for calling me out for cursing teams by focusing on how great they are playing or it was just plain luck (bad) the second month of the season was not so kind to some of the top teams in April:
Jack Street 16-12 (Ok they went from great to good)
Menomonee 14-14
Purry 14-14
Climax 8-20 (worst 2nd month … I deserve it tho)
Detroit 13-15

That said, while there were some new kids on the block in May some of the top 10 kept their momentum going with the top teams of the month being:
Clockwork 22-5
Fort Worth 21-7
Hoboken 20-8
Motown 18-10
Coastline 18-10
New Westminster 17-11

The commissioner’s office is not only lobbying for but also willing to cost-share the construction of a dome over the Segers Stadium as Fire Lake has officially been proclaimed the rainiest place in North America after having both of the rainouts this season.

Cincinnati Knights @ Jack Street Hustlers
Series Preview: AL East leading Jack Street Hustlers host the AL West 2nd place team Cincinnati Knights. . . should be a good one.
Game #1: Strasburg toes the rubber for the Knights vs. Haren for the Hustlers.

Back and forth game with Jack Street taking a 5-3 lead going to the 8th. The Knights blow up Hand in the final two innings to pull out a 7-5 win. Williams goes 4-5 with a double, homer, run and and rbi for the victors. In addition to Williams homer, the Knights got homers from Bando, Goodman and Sweet Lou Whitaker.

W – Wickman 4-1
L – Hand 3-2

Game #2: Vance for Cincy vs. Glavine for Jack Street.

The Knights jump out first in this one and take a 4-0 lead into the bottom of the 5th. Jack Street picks up 3 in the 5th and 1 in the 8th and the fans get bonus baseball. In the 11th, Vox singles and is pinch run for by Babe Phelps. Phelps moves to second on a ground out by Sewell and to third on a single by Williams. Bill Freehan steps to the plate and grounds to Hornsby. Looks like a double play, but Freehan beats it out and Phelps scores. That’s how it ends 5-4 Cincy. Irvin, Vox and Williams all pick up 3 hits for the Knights.

WP – Janssen 2-2
LP – Brantle 2-2

Game #3: Santana vs. Siebert.

Cincy jumps out early with 2 in the first and score 2 more in the 4th to take a 4-2 lead. The Knights hold on for a 6-3 victory. Giambi goes 2-4 with a double, homer, a run and 2 rbi. Bando and Phelps also send balls over the wall in the victory.

WP – Santana 10-2
LP – Siebert 3-6
Sv – Kline 1

Game #4: Kershaw for Cincinnati against Byrd for Jack Street

The Hustlers, losers of 6 in a row, jump out to a 3-0 lead after 3, but that’s all they could do as the Knights score 3 in the 4th, 1 in the 7th and 1 in the 9th to take the game 5-3. Phelps homers for the second game in a row and has a 3-4 game with 2 runs. Bando also homers. To add injury to insult (or something like that), Medwick goes down for 4 days.

WP – Kershaw 8-2
LP – Byrd 5-3
Sv – Janssen 10

Game #1: IOW 0 – DET 2: Cy Morgan outdueled Tiny Bonham for the complete-game victory going the distance while surrendering only three hits. Both Nap Lajoie and Yogi Berra went 2 for 4, while Ripper Collins clubbed homer #18.
Game #2: IOW 2 – DET 5: A Chet Lemon RBI single in the first inning put the Giants ahead. However, the DeLoreans answered with five runs in the next two innings and cruised to a 5-2 win. Detroit’s Anthony Rendon had two key RBI and Jack Aker picked up his sixth save of the season.

Game #4: IOW 1 – DET 4: The DeLoreans tallied a run in four straight innings to jump out 4-0. Detroit’s Hippo Vaughn went all nine innings and nearly got the shutout. Iowa’s Chet Lemon spoiled Vaughn’s bid with an RBI single in the top of the ninth inning. For Detroit, Anthony Rendon went 3 for 3 with a double. While Ripper Collins went 2 for 3 with a homer (19) and 2 RBI.
Game #5:
Game #6:
Game #7:
Series Summary: The DeLoreans sweep a closely contested series. Like the entire NL so far this season, pitching unfairly dominated the series. Cy Morgan’s game one complete game gem should get him consideration for Pitcher of the Week.
Virginia Cavaliers @ Clockwork Heros
Series Preview: Two teams with playoff hopes Clockwork is in 1st Virginia in 3rd.
Game #1: Virginia started off great getting 5 runs off Donovan as McReynolds hits for the CYCLE! But Lefty Gomez lost his control and Clockwork walked with bases loaded a couplke of times and scored 8 runs in the 6th. clockwork 10 virginia 8. Donovan (8-0) Tekulve S 16 L-Gomez (5-7)
Game #2: Virginia can do anything off Blyleven as he allows just 3 hits and no runs in 8 innings. Clockwork 6-1 W_blyleven(10-4) Key (3-2) terry hurt for 8 days
Game #3: Mathewson was awesome again pitching a 4 hitter and Bob Watson in for Terry hit 2 doubles, walked and HBP. Clockwork 5-0. W-Mathewson (10-3) L-turley (4-7)
Game #4: Virginia Guzman had a no hitter int he the 7th then allowed a single. He was pulled after 7 innings 1 hit. That was a mistake as Foulke the 23* gave up two runs without an out. Virgina also only got 2 hits one was a Kiner homer but not enough as Clockwork wins 2-1. W-Uhle(9-5) S-tekulve(17) L-Foulke (1-3)
Game #5:
Game #6:
Game #7:
Series Summary: Clockwork is a good team that got luck so it was a 4 game sweep.
Player of the week McReynolds hits for the Cycle Virginia
Pitcher of the Week Christy Mathewson W 9 innings 4 hits 1 walk 6 strikouts. 84 game score
Fantomz Force @ San Tan Valley Moonrakers
Series Preview: Two teams hanging around the .500 mark face off in the deserts of Arizona.
Game #1: San Tan Valley’s Virgil Trucks was brilliant, hurling a three hit, no walk, 7 strikeout, shutout. The Moonrakers lash out 5 doubles ( 2 by Hal Trotsky) in the 3-0 win
Game #2: The Fantomz Hal Coveleski drops to 1-9, giving up a 2 run homer to Vern Stephens and 6 runs in 6 innings. Donnie Baseball drove in two for the Force but their 9th inning rally falls short, giving San Tan a 6-4 win.
Game #3: Carl Weilman and Bump Hadley hook up in a pitchers duel. Through 8 innings the score stood at 2-2. Weilman was still in there in the bottom of the 9th when Charlie “Crazy Legs” Hickman dooubled, Gus Triandos singled, and pinch hitter Ken Keltner blasted a walk off three run homer. The Moonrakers took game #3, 5-2.
Game #4: The Fantomz Satchel Paige fell behind 3-0 by the second inning ( homers from Charlie “King Kong” Keller and Sherry Magee) but then he shut the door while the offense scored 5 unanswered runs to win 5-4. Ron Santo drove in 3. Paige had two hits and drove in a run. Magee hit a second homer off Felipe Vasquez in the 9th to make it close.
Game #5:
Game #6:
Game #7:
Series Summary: Virgil Trucks first game 3 hit shutout was the highlight of a 3-1 series win for San Tan.
Wainwright Wranglers @ West Michigan Retrogrades
Series Preview: The Wainwright Wranglers (27-34) travels to the West Michigan Retrogrades (30-31) for an inter-divisional 4-game series. The Wranglers are hoping to move up in the standing; the Retrogrades, leading the NL in team batting average, are hoping to move into a playoff position.
Game #1: West Michigan stuck first and built a 4-2 lead after 5 innings. However, the Wranglers tied the game in the 6th, but the Retrogrades went ahead again in the bottom of the frame on an RBI single by Robinson Cano. In the top of the 9th, Wainwright tied the game on a Mark Grace home run. However, West Michigan got the walk-off victory in the bottom of the 9th. After a lead-off walk by George Sisler, Tommy Davis blasted a Larry French pitch over Tony Gwynn’s head in left field for the win.
Tony Gwynn went 2-4, George Brett went 2-4, Kirby Puckett went 2-4 with a HR. Danny Neagle only lasted 5 innings and gave up 4 earned runs.
Tommy Davis was 3-5 with a triple, HR, and SB, Duke Snider was 2-4, Adrian Beltre was 3-3, and Heavy Johnson went 1-5. George Mullin was brought up from the farm for a spot start, his first of the season. He went 7.2 strong innings.
FINAL SCORE : WRANGLERS 5, RETROGRADES 7
Game #2: Two lefties, Lefty Grove and Willie Foster, from 1933 locked up in a pitchers dual. Both pitched complete games, however Grove’s defense let him down, allowing 2 unearned runs. As he’s done several times this season, Heavy Johnson lead the game off with a home run. But Bip Roberts doubled in Tony Fernandez in the 3rd inning to knot the score. The rest of the scoring happened in the bottom of the 4th, led by a Duke Snider double and Denis Menke single. However, Kirby Puckett’s throwing error contributed to the Wrangler’s demise. Willie Foster went the distance for a complete game 4-hitter while giving up 1 earned run. Edwin Encarnacion went 2-4 for the Wranglers. The Retrogrades were led by Heavy Johnson’s 2-4 with a double and HR and Snider’s 1-3.
FINAL SCORE : WRANGLERS 1, RETROGRADES 4
Game #3: Well, if you arrived fashionably late to the ballpark, you might have missed the scoring, since the ball game was decided within the first 3 innings. Duke Snider smacked a 3-run homer in the bottom of the 1st. Then the Retrogrades added 3 more runs in the bottom of the 2nd, led by a Heavy Johnson double. However, Wainright got 3 runs back in the top of the 3rd, led by a Heinie Manush double. Wainright was paced by Derren Daulton’s 2-3 and Manush’s 2-4. Once again, the West Michigan was led by Heavy Johnson’s 2-4, which included a double and triple.
FINAL SCORE : WRANGLERS 3, RETROGRADES 6
Game #4: The series wrap up was a dandy of a ball game, with Doc White and Urban Shocker both pitching gutty ball games. Wainright got 2 in the top of the 1st on infield hits and small ball. However, they left the bases loaded. White kept West Michigan off the board until the 4th when Bill Dickey doubled in a run. Then, the Retrogrades tied it in the 6th on a Tommy Davis solo shot. The game was tied until the top of the 8th when Manush double in a run. Yet, it was tied again in the bottom of the frame when Tommy Davis tripled in George Sisler. The game was tied heading into the bottom of the 9th when the Retrogrades loaded the bases with one out. That brought Heavy Johnson to the plate and he bruised one to the gap in left center for a game winning, walk-off hit. Tony Gwynn went 2-4, Bill Dickey went 2-4, Tommy Davis went 3-5 with a triple and HR to push his season average to .315 and keep in the hunt for a batting title, and Heavy Johnson went 2-4 with a triple.
FINAL SCORE : WRANGLERS 3, RETROGRADES 4
Game #5:
Game #6:
Game #7:
Series Summary: Though West Michigan got the sweep, the series was close with two walk-off wins for the Retrogrades. Heavy Johnson should be considered for player of the week, going 7-17 (.411) with a homer, 2 triples, 2 doubles, 3 RBI, and 3 runs scored to boost his season average to .284. Considering the LEG NL is like the Year of the Pitcher (1968) II, any average around the .300 mark is special.
Hoboken Zephyrs @ Climax Cougars
Series Preview: Hoboken travels to beat up on Climax with their army of arms guaranteeing that there won’t be too many chances to score.
Game #1: Mel Ott remained one of the few bright spots for the Climax Cougars in their plummet to the bowels of the NL East as he smashed a three-run homer off Jered Weaver in the first inning and the home team hung on to win the opener 4-1.
Ott’s homer was his 8th and was one of two hits he had on the day … the whole team had only five against Weaver (8-3) and reliever Steve Blass.
Shortstop Bill Dahlen was 2/2 with a walk and scored the lone run for the Zephyrs off Spud Chandler (9-2) in the 5th inning on a single by Eddie Yost. Clay Caroll pitched two perfect innings for his 4th save.
As billed, offense was scarce with each team getting only five hits in the contest.
Game #2: The Hoboken Zephyrs walked around the bases to their hearts content off starter Sid Fernandez in the 2nd inning scoring five times … more than enough to put away Climax on this day, but those bastards from New Jersey would not let up and added five more in the 3rd and closed it out with four more (why I ask you) in the 9th turning the Cougars into roadkill in a 14-1 rout.
Tom Seaver (11-2) gave up just a couple of hits with Sam Crawford’s 5th homer of the year being the only real blemish on the day.
The 18-hit attack didn’t include a single home run, but the Zephyrs banged out doubles like there was no tomorrow with Jimmie Wilson and Tommy Henrich each getting two. Henrich and Eddie Yost each had three hits in the game while Stan Spence and Jim Bottomley did more of the heavy lifting with three RBIs each.
Fernandez (0-3) didn’t make it out of the 3rd inning once again which may make him earmarked for either the bullpen or hung out on the trading block.
Jon Lester’s debut with the Cougars went somewhat stinkily as he tossed a shutout 8th but fared poorly in the 9th and allowed the four parting gift runs by the Zephyrs.
Game #3: A walk and an error by Bill Dahlen were the only things keeping Red Faber from tossing a perfect game, but he probably was not too heartbroken to have to settle for the league’s second no-hitter in history in a 3-0 Hoboken win.
Faber (8-5) only struck out three but he never really had any reason to go after the K as the Cougars were baffled (and drenched) all game by his spitter.
Cannonball Redding (2-4) was decent for Climax, going the distance as well but was victimized by a two-run Stan Spence (14) blast in the first inning and then unleashed a wild pitch with Eddie Yost on 3rd base. Ah well. Not like it mattered in the end.
Three games into the series and the Cougars have a whopping total of EIGHT HITS.
Game #4: Rube Waddell (4-4) spun a gem into the 9th before stumbling, but had enough of a cushion for the Climax Cougars to hang on for a 6-2 win to get a lucky series split.
The Cougars almost equalled their entire series offense in this game with seven hits. Mel Ott was a perfect 3/3 and a walk as he had two singles, a double and drove in three runs. Roger Peckinpaugh had two RBIs on a bloop single that really could have been called an error when Eddie Stanky misjudged his shallow pop up in right field.
Bill Dahlen spoiled the shutout bid with his 10th home run off Waddell in the top of the 9th. Ewell Blackwell fell to 1-5 with a rather lousy performance over 5.2 innings in which he gave up six runs on six hits and 9 walks. A little control issue, mebbe?
Game #5:
Game #6:
Game #7:
Series Summary: A series split is something the Cougars are definitely happy with as playing against the Zephyrs and their stifling pitching is extremely frustrating (as you can imagine with 15 hits over four games whereas the Zephyrs had 18 in one game). Climax bids Hoboken a hearty good riddance as they get set to go horror show against the Hollywood Zombies in Week 12
Nags Head Surf Sox @ Fire Lake Segers
Series Preview: Nags Head (26-35) traveled to Fire Lake (26-34)

This series was played via Team Viewer (Thanks Nigel!)

Game #1: Nolan Ryan (3-6,4.56) vs Denny Mclain (3-7,3.64)

Ryan left the game in the 2nd inning with an injury that may sideline him for some time. Top 3rd, Gary Carter hit a solo home run to puit the visitors up 1-0. In the bottom of the 3rd, Joey Votto smashed a 2-run double, and Johnny Bench followed with a rbi-single to put the Segers up 3-1. That was all Denny Mclain needed, as he went 8 2/3 innings to pick up his 4th win. Tug McGraw was the hard luck loser.

FIRE LAKE 5, NAGS HEAD 2

Game #2: Cole Hamels (3-3,3.44) vs Matt Morris (3-2,2.83)

This was not Hamels night, as the Segers beat him up early. Eric Davis’ 3-run home run in the bottom of the 1st, capped a 5 run inning and the home team never looked back. Pete Rose’s 3 hits included a double and a home run.

FIRE LAKE 10, NAGS HEAD 4

Game #3: Joaquin Andujar (2-11,6.54) vs Mario Soto (2-0,2.96)

Andujar was good, Soto was better on this night. In the bottom of the 2nd, the Segers’ 8 and 9 hitters, Bucky Walters and Soto each drove in a run. The games’ only runs. Mario Soto was making his very first start of the season and all he did was throw a complete game shutout, allowing 5 hits, 3 BB and 13 Ks. How frustrating was it for Nags Head? Frustrating enough for Ryne Sandberg to get himself ejected for arguing balls and strikes.

FIRE LAKE 2, NAGS HEAD 0

Game #4: Mike Mussina (4-5,3.25) vs David Cone (4-6,3.60)

Like game 3, this was a pitchers duel. This game was Mussina’s game, as Moose dialed up just what the Surf Sox needed, a complete game win. Mussina (starting in place of a fatigued Jim Palmer) allowed just 5 hits, walked 3 and struck out 4 to even his record at 5-5. Fire Lake’s David Cone allowed just a single hit through his 7 innings, a Jimmy Foxx 1st inning run scoring triple that scored Von Hayes (bb).

NAGS HEAD 2, FIRE LAKE 1

Game #5:
Game #6:
Game #7:
Series Summary: Fire Lake wins 3 of 4.
Motown Yankees @ Pigtown Bombers
Series Preview: The Battle of the “Towns” was played live via TeamViewer. Pigtown was desperately trying to get out of the cellar and Motown was trying to push towards the playoffs.
Game #1: The opening game of the series was taken by Pigtown 4-1 on the strength of 2 solo HRs by Mike Schmidt and another one by Hank Greenberg. Greenberg & Schmidt each had 2 RBIS and accounted for all of the scoring for the Bombers. McGinnity pitched 7 strong innings to improve to 7-6 on the year. PIG 4: MTY 1.
Game #2: Another strong start for Pigtown (Impo Barnhill pitches 6 innings and gives up 4 hits and 1 run) and the bat of Greenberg was all Pigtown needed. Greenberg went 2-4 with another solo HR and 2 RBIs to lead Pigtown to a 2-1 win. Motown got a solo HR from Frank White and a good pitching performance from Carl Hubbell (6 IP, 4 hits, 1 run) but it was not enough. PIG 2: MTY 1.
Game #3: Greg was getting worried that Pigtown was finally waking from their season-long coma and were going to win its first series at home in its history. It was not to be…Motown stormed out of the gate with 4 runs in the top of the 1st and were ahead 7-2 going into the bottom of the 8th on the strength of big hits from Kenny Lofton and Frank White. Pigtown was able to score one run in the 8th but trailed 7-3. In the bottom of the 9th, with the bases loaded and 2 outs, Motown brought in its closer, Koji Uehara, to pitch to Manny Ramirez…Grand Salami to tie the game at 7-7. The teams fought it out in extra innings until Motown proved too much and won the game 9-8 in the 15th inning. Motown had an amazing bullpen performance by Steve Mingori who pitched 5 innings and only gave up 2 hits to get the win. MTY 9:PIG 8.
Game #4: The only information needed on the finale is Adam Wainwright’s stat line – 9 IP, 1 Hit, 0 Runs. MTY wins 4-0.
Game #5:
Game #6:
Game #7:
Series Summary: A great series to play live (thanks Greg for the suggestion). Pigtown and Motown split 2-2. Pitching Star is definitely Adam Wainwright. A huge 1 hit Shutout to split the series when the bullpen was gassed from a 15 inning game the day before.

Hitting stars nominees are…Not really any, but if I had to pick one, I would go with Frank White 6-16 with 4 RBIs
